Night Mode, explained

Night Mode is a chamomile and peach flavoured powder you mix into warm or cold water about an hour before bed. It contains 28mg of saffron extract and is high in vitamin B6 and riboflavin.

Night Mode

What Night Mode is

It is a food supplement in a 180g tub with 30 servings. One 6g scoop goes into half a cup of water, around 150ml.

Most of the powder is a soluble fibre made from wheat, processed to be gluten-free. The rest is saffron extract, two B vitamins, natural flavourings and a colour.

The chamomile and peach taste comes from natural flavourings. The ingredient list contains no chamomile flowers or chamomile extract.

People use it as a warm or cold drink in their evening routine. It is vegan, sugar-free and gluten-free.

What's in it, ingredient by ingredient

Saffron stigmas extract (Crocus sativus L.)

28mg per daily dose

Saffron is the spice made from the dried red threads of the saffron crocus flower. Each flower has a single stigma that divides into three threads, and they are picked by hand.

It takes between 110,000 and 165,000 flowers to make one kilogram of dried saffron. Iran and Spain are the main producers.

Saffron's colour comes from compounds called crocins, its bitter taste from picrocrocin and its aroma from safranal.

Night Mode uses an extract, not the threads. Herbalife says the extract is made with a low-temperature process and that its levels of these compounds are checked by laboratory testing.

Why it's in Night Mode: Herbalife describes the saffron extract as the defining ingredient of Night Mode, created for your night-time routine.

Night Mode is not recommended for children, for breastfeeding women or during pregnancy.

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride)

0.42mg per daily dose, 30% of the reference intake

Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble B vitamin found in pork, chicken, turkey, some fish, peanuts, soya beans, oats, bananas and milk. Pyridoxine hydrochloride is the form of B6 used in Night Mode.

The NHS says men need 1.4mg a day and women 1.2mg. One drink gives 0.42mg, well under the NHS advice of no more than 10mg a day from supplements.

Why it's in Night Mode: Herbalife makes Night Mode high in vitamin B6.

Vitamin B6 contributes to normal psychological function. Vitamin B6 contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system.

At 30% of the reference intake per dose, Night Mode qualifies as high in vitamin B6.

Riboflavin (vitamin B2)

0.42mg per daily dose, 30% of the reference intake

Riboflavin is vitamin B2. Milk, eggs, fortified breakfast cereals, mushrooms and plain yoghurt are good sources.

The NHS says men need 1.3mg a day and women 1.1mg. Light can destroy riboflavin, which is why the NHS suggests keeping these foods out of direct sunlight.

Why it's in Night Mode: Herbalife makes Night Mode high in riboflavin as well as vitamin B6.

Riboflavin contributes to normal functioning of the nervous system.

The Department of Health and Social Care says 40mg or less a day of riboflavin from supplements is unlikely to cause harm. That is about a hundred times the amount in one dose.

Gluten-free soluble wheat fibre

This is a soluble fibre made from wheat, and it is the first ingredient, so it is the largest part of each 6g scoop.

It has been processed so the powder qualifies as gluten-free, which in the UK means no more than 20mg of gluten per kilogram. It still comes from wheat, so the label must say Contains wheat.

Why it's in Night Mode: It forms the base of the powder that carries the saffron, vitamins and flavour into your drink.

Gluten-free and wheat-free are not the same thing. If you are allergic to wheat itself, Night Mode is not suitable.

Natural flavourings give the chamomile and peach taste, and copper complexes of chlorophyllins (E141) are a green colour made from chlorophyll. Silicon dioxide (E551) is an anti-caking agent that stops the powder clumping.

Reading the label

Per daily dose of 6g, one scoop

  • Riboflavin: 0.42mg (30% RI). About a third of the 1.3mg men need and 38% of the 1.1mg women need each day, according to the NHS.
  • Vitamin B6: 0.42mg (30% RI). About 30% of the 1.4mg men need and 35% of the 1.2mg women need each day.
  • Saffron stigmas extract: 28mg. It is an extract rather than saffron threads, and Herbalife does not publish the equivalent weight of threads.

RI means reference intake, the single figure UK labels use for every adult. A product needs at least 30% of the RI per dose to be called high in a vitamin, which is why Night Mode can say high in B6 and riboflavin.

The label lists no calories, sugar or fat, because Herbalife presents Night Mode as a supplement. Its product page states that it is sugar-free.

How to use it

STEP 1

Mix one scoop

Add one 6g scoop to half a cup of cold or warm water, around 150ml, and mix.

STEP 2

Drink it before bed

Enjoy it about an hour before bedtime. Herbalife's label says one scoop once a day.

Some people prefer it warm, like a cup of herbal tea, and others drink it cold. Both are in line with Herbalife's instructions.

A 180g tub gives 30 servings, which is a month of evenings. Keep the lid closed and store it somewhere cool and dry.
