What Herbalife Loaded Teas Are Actually Sweetened With

A loaded tea tastes sweet and carries almost no calories. People reasonably ask where that sweetness comes from, since the tea powder is not the answer.

Quick answer: what sweetens a loaded tea?

Not the tea. Instant Herbal Beverage is made with no artificial sweeteners. The sweetness comes from what gets added. LiftOff declares acesulfame K and sucralose. Herbal Aloe Concentrate declares sucralose.

The tea itself carries no sweetener

The UK fact sheet for Instant Herbal Beverage lists maltodextrin, green tea and orange pekoe tea extracts, caffeine powder, natural flavouring, hibiscus and cardamom.

It states no artificial colours, sweeteners or flavours. So a cup of the tea on its own is not the source of the sweet taste people describe.

What each added ingredient declares

Ingredient Sweetener declared Calories per serving
Instant Herbal Beverage Original 51g None 6 kcal
Lift Off® Effervescent Energy Drink Lemon-lime 10 tablets per box Acesulfame K and sucralose 10 kcal
Aloe Concentrate Aloe Mango 473ml Sucralose 2 kcal

That is the whole answer. The sweetness in a typical build comes from the LiftOff tablet and the aloe concentrate, not from the tea powder.

The calorie figures explain why the drink stays low in calories. Intense sweeteners contribute taste without contributing energy.

There is more detail on the herbalife tea page.

Fruit and syrups change the answer

Many recipes online add fruit juice, cordial or flavoured syrup. Those carry sugar and calories that none of the three products above contribute.

If you are counting sugar, the added extras are what you need to read, not the Herbalife labels. The label you cannot see is the one that catches you out.

What the sweetness is hiding

A sweet, cold drink hides caffeine well. One serving of tea states 87.5 mg and one LiftOff tablet states 75 mg.

Stacked together that is 162.5 mg in a single glass, before any coffee. The NHS advises no more than 200 mg of caffeine a day in pregnancy.

The LiftOff label says it is not recommended for children, for pregnant or nursing women, or for anyone sensitive to caffeine, and not to be used with alcohol.
